Thabani's Story
Zimbabwean-born saxophonist Thabani Gapara is Southern African jazz embodied with a sound as commanding as it is soulful. He was born into its rhythms, raised in its music traditions. And now is reimagining them connecting past, present, and future in a groove that demands to be felt.
For two decades, Thabani has been a trusted sideman and an in-demand session musician, a quiet giant behind the music. 2020 saw him step into his own spotlight, bringing his passion for Southern African jazz to the forefront. His music is a vibrant fusion of Bantu rhythms, funk grooves, and boundless improvisation that incorporates all sounds of the African diaspora.
A passionate collaborator, Thabani has played for a wide array of New Zealand artists, including; Corrella, LEISURE, Katchafire, Mazbou Q, Rubi Du, Stan Walker, Jujulipps, Rob Ruha, Troy Kingi, Ella Monnery, Bella Kalolo, Lou’ana, The Modern Māori Quartet, House of Shem, Batucada Sound Machine, and many more.
His discography invites listeners into the soul of Southern African jazz starting with his first project "In Their Footsteps Vol.1" (2020), "The Griot’s Path" (2021), "In Their Footsteps Vol.2" (2024) and his most recent album "Dzindza" (2024).
Live shows with Thabani and his band are vibrant and electric, full of joy and passion that captivates his audiences. Recent tours include; Mwana Wevhu (2023), In Their Footsteps (2024), Dzindza (late 2024), and most recently The African Traveller (2025).
